How many Apollo astronauts have walked on the Moon? Twelve. They reached the lunar surface during six successful Apollo landings between 1969 and 1972, with two astronauts walking on each mission.
The first were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11. The final two were Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt on Apollo 17; Schmitt was the 12th person to step onto the Moon, while Cernan remains the last person to leave it. No Apollo astronaut landed on the Moon more than once.
A common mix-up is confusing people who traveled to the Moon with people who walked there. Twenty-four astronauts flew on Apollo missions to the Moon or its vicinity, including the crews of Apollo 8, Apollo 10, and Apollo 13, but only half of them landed. Apollo 13's Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise flew around the Moon without landing after an oxygen-tank explosion forced the mission to abort its landing attempt.
The six landing missions were Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17; Apollo 13 was intended to land but did not.
