Nine Allied countries signed Japan’s surrender document after General MacArthur.
The representatives came from the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. General Douglas MacArthur signed first for the Allied powers, and Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz signed for the United States before the other national representatives.
The order reflected the coalition that had fought Japan across the Asia-Pacific region and included major Allied powers as well as countries whose forces had contributed to the war. The signing ceremony took place aboard USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
The number can be confusing because the Japanese delegation also included eleven representatives, but only two Japanese officials actually signed the document. Likewise, MacArthur signed for the Allied powers separately from the nine national representatives who followed him.
