How many Academy Awards did The Godfather win?
Answer
Three
The Godfather won three Academy Awards.
At the 45th Academy Awards, the film won Best Picture, Best Actor for Marlon Brando, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola. These three victories recognized the film’s production, leading performance, and screenplay.
The film received 11 nominations overall, including nominations for Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and director Francis Ford Coppola. Brando did not personally accept his award; Sacheen Littlefeather attended in his place and declined it on his behalf.
The Godfather is sometimes remembered as winning more Oscars because it received many nominations and became a landmark film. Its sequel, The Godfather Part II, won six Academy Awards, making the two films’ totals easy to confuse.
