Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away won one Academy Award: Best Animated Feature.
The film received the award at the 75th Academy Awards ceremony in 2003, honoring films released during 2002. It was directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, and its Oscar win made it the first Japanese animated feature to win the category.
Spirited Away competed against Ice Age, Lilo & Stitch, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Treasure Planet. It is sometimes described as the first hand-drawn film to win, but that wording is incomplete because the award recognizes the film’s category rather than a single animation technique. The film also won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival, a separate achievement.
