How long was the Berlin Wall system around West Berlin?

The story behind the answer

The Berlin Wall system around West Berlin was about 155 kilometres long. This figure describes the fortified border enclosing West Berlin, not merely one continuous concrete wall.

The barrier included different structures, including concrete walls, wire fences, patrol roads, watchtowers, lighting systems, and a controlled area commonly called the death strip. Its design changed over time as East German authorities strengthened security and replaced earlier barriers with more advanced installations.

About 43 kilometres of the system ran through Berlin’s built-up urban area, separating West Berlin from East Berlin. The remaining sections bordered West Berlin against the surrounding East German district.

A common mix-up is to quote only the length of the best-known concrete sections or to confuse the Berlin Wall with the much longer inner-German border. The wider border between East and West Germany extended for roughly 1,400 kilometres, while the Berlin system specifically enclosed West Berlin.
