How long is the time limit for a top-division professional sumo bout?
Answer
Four minutes
Answer
Four minutes
A top-division professional sumo bout has a time limit of four minutes.
Most bouts end much sooner because one wrestler is pushed out of the ring or touches the ground. If neither wrestler has won after the scheduled period, the referee may call a brief break before the action resumes. The time limit helps keep tournament days manageable, since hundreds of bouts may be held across the divisions.
The limit varies by division. Makuuchi and juryō bouts receive four minutes, while lower divisions have shorter limits. The timing begins when the wrestlers make the tachiai, not simply when they first enter the ring or begin the pre-bout ceremonies.
A bout can also be interrupted when the referee or judges need to examine a potentially decisive action. Such reviews are separate from the ordinary clock and can determine whether a wrestler stepped out or touched down first.
