How long is the surviving East Side Gallery section of the Berlin Wall?

The story behind the answer

The surviving East Side Gallery section of the Berlin Wall is about 1.3 kilometers long. It runs along the former border between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg beside the River Spree in central Berlin.

After the border opened in November 1989, artists from numerous countries painted murals on the remaining wall section in 1990. The project transformed a former instrument of repression into a public art site. Its works address freedom, political change, peace, and the end of Europe’s division.

The East Side Gallery is not the entire former Berlin Wall. It is one preserved stretch of the original inner-city barrier, and many of its murals have required restoration because of weather, pollution, vandalism, and the physical condition of the concrete.

Visitors sometimes assume every painting dates from the night the Wall fell. In fact, the organized gallery project followed the opening and was created during the political transition that led to German reunification in October 1990.
