How long is a standard rugby league match, excluding half-time?

The story behind the answer

A standard rugby league match lasts 80 minutes, excluding half-time.

The match is divided into two 40-minute halves. Teams change ends at half-time, and the interval normally lasts 10 minutes in professional competitions, although competition rules can specify the exact break.

The clock may be stopped or managed differently for certain incidents, including serious injuries, disciplinary procedures or other circumstances determined by the match officials. Added time can therefore affect the actual time spent at the ground, but the scheduled playing time remains 80 minutes.

This duration distinguishes rugby league from several other football codes. Rugby union also uses two 40-minute halves, while association football normally has two 45-minute halves. Rugby league’s shorter halves are paired with a continuous six-tackle attacking system and frequent exchanges of possession.
