How are Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC related?

The story behind the answer

Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC were brothers. Malcolm was the older brother and rhythm guitarist, while Angus was the younger brother and lead guitarist known for his school-uniform stage outfit and energetic performances.

The brothers formed AC/DC in Sydney in 1973 after their family had moved from Scotland to Australia. Malcolm became the band’s musical organiser and rhythmic foundation, while Angus supplied many of its most recognisable guitar solos and stage visuals. Their partnership shaped AC/DC’s driving, tightly locked rock sound.

The Young family produced several musicians, which creates a frequent source of confusion. George Young, another older brother, was a member of the Easybeats and later helped produce AC/DC records. Stevie Young, who later replaced Malcolm on guitar, is Malcolm and Angus’s nephew—not their brother. AC/DC’s founding Young brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2003.
