Fortnite Battle Royale was developed in about how many months?

The story behind the answer

Fortnite Battle Royale was developed in about two months. Epic Games began the project in July 2017, shortly after Fortnite: Save the World entered early access and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds demonstrated the popularity of the battle-royale format.

Rather than build a separate game from scratch, Epic reused Fortnite’s existing technology, art assets, building mechanics, and much of its underlying framework. The team created a distinct mode with a large island, a shrinking safe zone, limited weapon progression, and matches designed to last no longer than about 25 minutes.

The short schedule explains why the first version was relatively focused. Epic postponed more complex ideas until after launch and worked with assistance from the Unreal Tournament team. Building proved to be a key differentiator: developers initially were unsure how players would use it in a shrinking arena, but it quickly became central to high-level play.

Battle Royale was officially released on September 26, 2017, and its rapid success led Epic to form dedicated teams for ongoing updates and support.
