For which Nintendo console was Fire Emblem Awakening first developed?

The story behind the answer

Fire Emblem Awakening was first developed for the Nintendo 3DS.

Intelligent Systems began developing the game in 2010, while the 3DS hardware was still being finalized. The team designed its tactical battles, character models, and 3D environments around the capabilities of Nintendo’s new handheld. Awakening was released in Japan in 2012, followed by North American and European releases in 2013.

The game was the first Fire Emblem title developed for the 3DS and became a major turning point for the series. Its accessible systems, relationship mechanics, optional Casual Mode, and downloadable content helped attract new players. The Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance hosted earlier Fire Emblem titles, while the Wii U was never the original development platform for Awakening.
