For which country did Guy Fawkes fight as a soldier?
Answer
Spain
Answer
Spain
Guy Fawkes fought as a soldier for Spain. After converting to Catholicism, Fawkes left England and joined Catholic Spanish forces fighting Protestant Dutch rebels in the Eighty Years’ War.
He served in the Low Countries, gaining military experience that later made him valuable to the Gunpowder Plot conspirators. He was known for handling explosives and used the name Guido Fawkes while abroad. His service was not for the English government; England was a Protestant power opposed to Catholic Spain during much of this period.
A common mix-up is France. Fawkes travelled through France and sought foreign support for a Catholic uprising in England, but Spain is the standard answer to the question because he fought in Spanish service. He returned to England in 1604 and joined Robert Catesby’s plot to blow up King James I and Parliament.
