Broadcom acquired CA Technologies in 2018 to expand beyond semiconductor products into infrastructure software.
CA Technologies, formerly Computer Associates, developed enterprise software used for areas such as mainframe management, cybersecurity, and application development. Broadcom announced the acquisition in July 2018 and completed it later that year in a transaction valued at approximately $18.9 billion.
The deal was part of Broadcom’s strategy of combining semiconductor operations with established enterprise-software businesses. Broadcom later made another major software acquisition when it bought VMware in 2023. CA Technologies is therefore not the same acquisition as VMware, and Qualcomm was the target of Broadcom’s proposed but unsuccessful 2018 takeover attempt.
