Finish the Mac Miller lyric, “They gave me the key to the ____”: the answer is “sky.” The line appears in “Programs,” a standalone single Miller released in 2018.
“Programs” arrived on May 30, 2018, through Warner Records. It was one of several tracks Miller released during the final phase of his career, when his music often balanced confidence, self-reliance, mortality, and the pressures surrounding fame.
The lyric’s next idea contrasts the apparent freedom or elevation suggested by the sky with the need to remain mentally alert and grounded. That contrast is typical of Miller’s writing: an image of success is immediately questioned rather than presented as uncomplicated triumph.
The song was produced by Cardo and Cubeatz and was released as a non-album single. It came out before Miller’s album Swimming, which followed in August 2018. Because “Programs” was not originally part of a studio album, some listeners remember the lyric without immediately connecting it to a specific record.
