Elvis Presley based his look on which comic book superhero?

The story behind the answer

Elvis Presley based his look on Captain Marvel Jr. The Fawcett Comics superhero, also known as Freddy Freeman, was a favorite of Elvis during his youth. Elvis later drew on the character’s visual style when developing his own stage image.

Captain Marvel Jr. wore a distinctive costume featuring a high collar, boots, a lightning-bolt emblem and a dramatic cape. Those elements have often been compared with Elvis’s high-collared jumpsuits, bold belts, boots and flamboyant concert outfits, especially during his 1970s performances.

The character should not be confused with Shazam, although the names are connected. Captain Marvel Jr. was part of the same superhero family as Captain Marvel, the character later commonly marketed by DC as Shazam. In the comics, Freddy Freeman transformed into Captain Marvel Jr. after being empowered by Captain Marvel.

Elvis did not simply copy the costume as a formal uniform; he adapted selected details into a rock-and-roll stage persona. That blend of comic-book imagery, glamour and theatrical tailoring helped make his later concert appearance instantly recognizable.
