During hajj and umrah, pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times during tawaf. The circuits are made counterclockwise, with the Kaaba kept on the pilgrim's left side.
Tawaf is performed in Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. Depending on the pilgrimage rite, it can occur at different stages, including the arrival tawaf, the main tawaf of hajj, and the farewell tawaf. The circuits are normally begun near the Black Stone.
Tawaf should not be confused with sa'i, which is the seven-part journey between Safa and Marwa. Both rites involve repeated movement, but tawaf circles the Kaaba while sa'i follows a route between two hills.
