The incident occurred as Jackson was becoming a major solo performer. His 1979 album Off the Wall marked a decisive breakthrough, combining disco, funk, pop, and R&B and producing hits such as “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You.” His demanding choreography was already an important part of his stage identity.
The rehearsal injury is sometimes confused with Jackson’s later medical events, especially the 1984 Pepsi commercial accident, when his hair and scalp caught fire during filming. It is also separate from the many theories about his changing appearance. Jackson said he had undergone two rhinoplasty operations, while public reports and later testimony described additional procedures and health-related issues involving his nose.
