Depending on the country, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated for how many days?

The story behind the answer

Depending on the country, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated for one to three days.

The religious date of Eid al-Fitr is 1 Shawwal, the first day after Ramadan ends. Muslims commonly begin with a special congregational Eid prayer, followed by visits, festive meals, charity, and gift-giving. The length of the wider celebration varies according to local custom, government holidays, and family tradition, so it may last one, two, or three days.

This does not mean that the Eid prayer itself lasts several days. The prayer is normally performed once, on the morning of Eid, while the social and public holiday period may continue afterward. Some countries officially close workplaces and schools for multiple days, whereas others recognize only the first day as the principal holiday.

Moon sighting also affects when celebrations begin. If the Shawwal crescent is not seen after the 29th day of Ramadan, Ramadan is completed as a 30-day month and Eid begins the following day. Communities in different countries can therefore celebrate on different Gregorian dates, even while observing the same Islamic festival.
