Avago Technologies acquired Broadcom Corporation in 2016, creating the company now known as Broadcom Inc.
Avago Technologies announced the acquisition of Broadcom Corporation in 2015, and the transaction closed in February 2016. The combined company adopted the Broadcom name and retained the ticker symbol AVGO, while Broadcom Corporation became a subsidiary.
The deal joined Avago’s strength in communications and infrastructure semiconductors with Broadcom Corporation’s large portfolio of chips for networking, wireless communications, broadband, and storage. Broadcom later expanded further through acquisitions, including VMware in 2023.
This history can be confusing because the modern company’s name came from the acquired business, while the legal acquirer was Avago Technologies. The two companies were separate semiconductor businesses before the 2016 transaction.
