Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in November 2023.
The transaction closed on November 22, 2023, after regulators reviewed Broadcom's proposed purchase of the cloud-computing and virtualization company. Broadcom announced the deal in May 2022, valuing VMware at approximately $69 billion, subject to adjustments and the structure of the transaction.
VMware was founded in 1998 and became widely known for software that allows multiple virtual machines to run on one physical computer. Virtualization helped data centers use hardware more efficiently and became a foundation for modern enterprise cloud infrastructure.
The acquisition expanded Broadcom beyond semiconductors and infrastructure software. After the closing, VMware's end-user computing business was sold to KKR in 2024, while Broadcom concentrated VMware on private-cloud and enterprise infrastructure products. VMware is not the same company as Red Hat, Citrix, or Nutanix, which also operate in adjacent enterprise-software markets.
