Broadcom, a major semiconductor and infrastructure-software company by market capitalization, completed its acquisition of VMware in 2023.
Broadcom completed the VMware acquisition on November 22, 2023, after regulators reviewed the transaction in several jurisdictions. The deal substantially expanded Broadcom's software business beyond its established semiconductor operations.
VMware was known for virtualization software, which allows one physical computer or server to run multiple virtual machines. That technology became important in enterprise data centers and cloud infrastructure.
Broadcom had already expanded through large acquisitions, including CA Technologies in 2018 and Symantec's enterprise-security business in 2019. Its VMware purchase therefore continued a strategy of combining semiconductor products with recurring enterprise-software revenue.
