Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware on November 22, 2023, after announcing the proposed transaction in May 2022. The deal valued VMware at approximately $69 billion and significantly expanded Broadcom’s software business. VMware was known for virtualization software, which allows multiple virtual machines and operating environments to run on shared physical hardware.
Before the transaction, Broadcom was best known for designing and supplying semiconductors used in communications, networking, storage, and other electronic systems. After the acquisition, VMware became part of Broadcom’s infrastructure-software strategy. The transaction required regulatory review in several jurisdictions, including the European Union and the United Kingdom, before closing. A common mix-up is to date the deal from its announcement in 2022; the acquisition itself was completed in 2023.
