Princess Elizabeth was staying at Coombe Abbey in Warwickshire when the Gunpowder Plot conspirators planned to seize her.
Coombe Abbey was a former Cistercian monastery converted into a country house. In 1605, the young Princess Elizabeth was staying there under the protection of Lord Harington. The conspirators intended to capture her after killing James I and use her as a nominal monarch while they tried to establish a Catholic government.
Robert Catesby and his companions had expected the plot to succeed during the state opening of Parliament. They also planned to raise support in the Midlands, where they hoped Catholic sympathisers would join them. The discovery of the gunpowder made the planned seizure impossible.
Coombe Abbey later became a hotel and event venue. It is located near Coventry, and its connection with the plot comes from Elizabeth’s presence there rather than from any fighting at the site.
