At which university did Mendel study for two years?
Answer
University of Vienna
Answer
University of Vienna
Mendel studied for almost two years at the University of Vienna. He went there in 1851 with the support of Abbot Cyril Napp, who wanted him to gain the advanced education needed for a teaching career.
At Vienna, Mendel studied physics, mathematics, chemistry, botany, zoology, and paleontology. He attended lectures associated with leading scientists, including the physicist Christian Doppler and the botanist Franz Unger. This training helped shape the experimental and mathematical methods he later applied to plant hybridization.
Mendel’s time in Vienna was not a complete degree program. Financial difficulties and illness interrupted his studies, and he returned to Brno in 1853. He later taught at the Brno secondary school and began the pea experiments that led to his principles of inheritance. The University of Olomouc, where he had earlier studied philosophy, is therefore a common alternative mistakenly given for this question.
