Answer
University of Oxford
Answer
University of Oxford
J.R.R. Tolkien studied English and later taught for most of his academic career at the University of Oxford.
He entered Exeter College, Oxford, in 1911 and studied Classics before changing to the English Language and Literature course. Tolkien later held several Oxford posts, including the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professorship of Anglo-Saxon and the Merton Professorship of English Language and Literature.
Oxford shaped both Tolkien’s scholarship and his friendships. He was part of the informal literary group known as the Inklings, which included C.S. Lewis. Tolkien retired from Oxford in 1959, but the university remains strongly associated with his work, from his study of Old and Middle English to the writing and development of his Middle-earth stories.
