At which university did J.R.R. Tolkien hold his famous professorship in Anglo-Saxon?
Answer
University of Oxford
Answer
University of Oxford
J.R.R. Tolkien held his famous professorship in Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford.
He became Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford in 1925, a position he held until 1945. He later served as Merton Professor of English Language and Literature at the same university from 1945 to 1959.
Oxford was central to Tolkien’s academic and literary life. He taught Old English and related subjects, researched medieval texts, and participated in literary discussion groups. His academic expertise in languages and early literature strongly informed the depth of his invented histories and languages.
Tolkien was also part of the informal Inklings group, whose members included C.S. Lewis. Their meetings were associated with Oxford, but the Inklings was a literary circle rather than a university department or official academic institution.
