At which university did Dr. Watson obtain his medical degree?
Answer
University of London
Answer
University of London
Dr. Watson obtained his medical degree at the University of London.
Watson states this in A Study in Scarlet, the 1887 story that introduces him as Holmes’s friend and narrator. He says that in 1878 he took his Doctor of Medicine degree and then went to Netley to complete the prescribed training for army surgeons. His medical education is also associated with St Bartholomew’s Hospital, commonly called Bart’s, in London.
The detail can be confusing because Watson’s education is described in more than one way across Holmes-related material. The canonical account gives the degree-awarding institution as the University of London, while his clinical training was connected with London medical institutions. A non-canonical piece, The Field Bazaar, links him with Edinburgh, but that is not the answer normally intended by this question.
After Netley, Watson served as an assistant surgeon with the British Army in India. He was wounded at the Battle of Maiwand in 1880 and later returned to London, where his chance meeting with Stamford led to his famous partnership with Holmes.
