At which university did C.S. Lewis become a fellow and tutor in English in 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis became a fellow and tutor in English at Cambridge University in 1954.

Before moving to Cambridge, Lewis spent most of his academic career at Oxford. He was a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1925 until 1954. His Oxford years included teaching, literary scholarship, and participation in the Inklings, an informal group of writers and scholars.

At Cambridge, Lewis held the newly established chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College. The appointment gave him a formal academic position at a second ancient English university while he continued writing fiction, apologetics, and literary criticism.

The Cambridge appointment is frequently confused with Lewis’s much longer Oxford career. Oxford was where he spent the majority of his professional life, but Cambridge was his final university post. The college names can also cause confusion: Lewis taught at Magdalen College, Oxford, and later held his Cambridge chair at Magdalene College, Cambridge, with different spellings.
