Darwin entered Edinburgh in October 1825, aged 16, alongside his older brother Erasmus. His father hoped he would follow the family tradition and become a physician. Edinburgh was then one of Britain's leading medical centres, with strong teaching in anatomy, surgery, natural history and clinical medicine.

Darwin soon found surgery distressing and medical lectures unappealing, however. His real enthusiasm was natural history. He attended Robert Jameson's natural-history course, explored the university museum and joined the student-run Plinian Society. He also worked with the marine biologist Robert Edmond Grant, studying invertebrates around the Firth of Forth. These experiences helped turn him toward scientific investigation.

A common mix-up is Cambridge: Darwin later studied at Christ's College, Cambridge, from 1828, but he went there to prepare for an Anglican clerical career, not to study medicine. He left Edinburgh without completing medical training, and the observations he made there became an important early step toward his later career as a naturalist.
