Charles Darwin married Emma Wedgwood on 29 January 1839.

The wedding took place at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Maer, Staffordshire. Emma Wedgwood was Darwin’s first cousin, and she accepted his proposal on 11 November 1838, when she was 30 years old. Their marriage followed only a little over two months later.

The couple soon established their family life at Down House in the village of Down, near London. Emma managed the household and cared for their children while Darwin pursued his scientific writing and experiments. Their correspondence and shared domestic life became an important part of the history surrounding Darwin’s work.

Darwin and Emma had ten children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. Several later became prominent in science, including George, Francis, and Horace Darwin, all of whom were elected Fellows of the Royal Society. The date is often confused with Darwin’s birth date, 12 February 1809, or with the date of his proposal in November 1838.
