At which Staffordshire house did Robert Catesby and other plotters make their last stand?

The story behind the answer

Holbeche House was the Staffordshire site where Robert Catesby and other Gunpowder Plot conspirators made their last stand.

After the failed attempt to blow up Parliament, the remaining plotters rode north and tried to gather support from Catholic sympathisers. Their flight ended at Holbeche House, near Kingswinford, where they stopped to dry damp gunpowder and prepare for resistance.

Government forces arrived on 8 November 1605. In the ensuing fight, Catesby and Thomas Percy were fatally shot. The surviving conspirators were captured and later taken to London for trial.

Holbeche House should not be confused with Ashby St Ledgers, Catesby’s family home, or Coughton Court, where members of the Throckmorton family lived. Those places are also associated with the plot’s background, but Holbeche House was the location of the final confrontation.
