At which South African beach can visitors see a famous colony of African penguins?

The story behind the answer

Boulders Beach in South Africa is famous for its accessible colony of African penguins.

The beach lies near Simon’s Town on the Cape Peninsula, close to Cape Town. Large granite boulders shelter sections of the shoreline, creating protected spaces where African penguins can nest and raise chicks. The site forms part of the Table Mountain National Park marine protected area.

African penguins were once widely distributed along the south-western coast of Africa, but their numbers have fallen because of overfishing, historical egg collection, guano removal, oil spills, and other human pressures. Boulders Beach became especially well known because visitors can observe the birds from boardwalks while remaining outside nesting areas.

The penguins are wild animals, not performers or captive exhibits. Visitors are expected to keep their distance, avoid feeding them, and follow park rules. Boulders Beach is therefore both a tourism landmark and an important reminder of the species’ conservation needs.
