At which school did Mendel teach physics and natural history?

The story behind the answer

Mendel taught physics and natural history at the Realschule in Brno. The school was a secondary institution in Brno, then called Brünn, where he worked as a substitute teacher from 1854.

His teaching career followed serious scientific training. Mendel studied at the University of Vienna from 1851 to 1853, attending physics lectures under Christian Doppler and studying subjects including botany and plant physiology. After returning to the Augustinian monastery in Brno, he taught mainly physics and later worked at the city's Realschule.

The school became important to Mendel's scientific life because Brno provided the community and facilities in which he pursued his experiments. He met the naturalist Aleksander Zawadzki in 1854, and Zawadzki encouraged his research. Mendel began his best-known pea-hybridization experiments in 1856, while also teaching. A common confusion is to place this work at the University of Vienna: Vienna was where Mendel studied, but the Realschule in Brno was where he taught physics and natural history.
