At which Oxford college did J.R.R. Tolkien teach and serve as a fellow?
Answer
Merton College
Answer
Merton College
J.R.R. Tolkien taught and served as a fellow at Merton College, Oxford.
He became Merton Professor of English Language and Literature in 1945, after previously holding academic posts at the University of Leeds and Pembroke College, Oxford. His work at Merton continued until his retirement in 1959.
Tolkien’s Oxford career combined teaching with research in medieval and Old English literature. His famous 1936 lecture “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics” helped transform scholarly discussion of Beowulf by arguing that its monsters were central to the poem’s design rather than distractions from its historical value.
Tolkien’s academic interests also fed his fiction. His knowledge of Old English, Middle English, Norse mythology, and medieval storytelling influenced the languages, names, poems, and narrative structures found in Middle-earth.
