At which Olympic Games was table tennis mixed doubles first introduced?

The story behind the answer

Table tennis mixed doubles was first introduced at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The mixed doubles event brought together one female and one male player from each pair. It replaced the Olympic doubles events that had previously been contested before the Olympic programme was reorganized. The Tokyo competition was held in 2021 after the Games were postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is officially identified as the 2020 Olympics.

Japan’s Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito won the inaugural Olympic mixed doubles gold medal. They defeated China’s Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen in the final, giving the host nation a memorable victory.

The addition of mixed doubles expanded Olympic table tennis to five events: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s team events, and mixed doubles. This format continued at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
