At which Olympic Games did table tennis team events replace doubles events?

The story behind the answer

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, table tennis team events replaced the doubles events.

Beijing marked the first Olympic appearance of men’s and women’s team table tennis. The programme still included men’s and women’s singles, but the doubles competitions were removed to make room for team tournaments.

The team format was designed around ties involving singles and doubles matches. This allowed countries to demonstrate collective strength rather than relying only on one doubles pair. China won the men’s and women’s team titles on home soil.

This change is sometimes confused with the introduction of Olympic mixed doubles. Mixed doubles was added later, at the Tokyo 2020 Games, which were held in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Beijing 2008 was specifically the milestone for team events replacing doubles.
