At which Olympic Games did table tennis make its Olympic debut?

The story behind the answer

Table tennis made its Olympic debut at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

The Seoul Games introduced the sport to the Olympic programme with men’s and women’s singles and doubles events. South Korea hosted the competition, and the home crowd watched athletes compete in the first Olympic table tennis tournament.

Table tennis had previously appeared at international competitions, including the World Championships, but Olympic inclusion gave it a much larger global platform. The sport has remained on the Summer Olympic programme ever since, although the event structure has changed over time.

A common mix-up is to confuse Olympic debut with the first Olympic table tennis final or the first Olympic gold medalist. Seoul was the first Games at which the sport itself was contested; later Games introduced different event formats, including team events.
