At which New York museum did Georgia O'Keeffe's 1946 retrospective take place?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's 1946 retrospective took place at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was the first retrospective devoted to her work by a major American museum and confirmed her importance in the development of American modernism.

The exhibition followed a career that had moved from early abstract drawings to urban paintings, flower studies, and landscapes inspired by New Mexico. Its timing was significant because it appeared shortly after the death of Alfred Stieglitz, O'Keeffe's husband and longtime promoter.

The Museum of Modern Art is commonly abbreviated MoMA. It should not be confused with the Whitney Museum, which also mounted important O'Keeffe exhibitions, including a major retrospective in 1970.
