At which New York institution did Georgia O'Keeffe study with Arthur Wesley Dow?
Answer
Teachers College, Columbia University
Answer
Teachers College, Columbia University
Georgia O'Keeffe studied with Arthur Wesley Dow at Teachers College, Columbia University.
She attended Teachers College in New York in 1914 and 1915, studying with Dow. His teaching stressed the organization of line, color, and tone, and encouraged students to develop individual approaches instead of relying only on realistic representation.
Dow's ideas had a major effect on O'Keeffe. After returning to teaching, she began making a series of abstract charcoal drawings in 1915. These works were among the first fully abstract works produced by an American artist and helped establish the direction of her mature career.
O'Keeffe had earlier studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. Those schools are therefore easy to confuse with Teachers College, but Dow taught her at the Columbia-affiliated institution.
