At which New York gallery did Georgia O'Keeffe's work first receive a solo exhibition?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's work first received a solo exhibition at the New York gallery known as 291.

The gallery was operated by Alfred Stieglitz at 291 Fifth Avenue and was formally associated with the Photo-Secession movement. Stieglitz first exhibited some of O'Keeffe's abstract drawings there in 1916. In 1917, 291 presented her first solo exhibition, establishing an important early connection between her work and the New York modernist art scene.

The gallery's name came from its street address. It had shown photography as well as modern European and American art, making it a significant venue for new artistic ideas. O'Keeffe's later exhibitions at Stieglitz's other galleries are sometimes blended together with the 291 event, but 291 was the site of her first solo presentation.
