At which New York art school did Georgia O'Keeffe study with instructor Kenyon Cox?
Answer
Art Students League
Answer
Art Students League
Georgia O'Keeffe studied at the Art Students League in New York with instructor Kenyon Cox.
O'Keeffe attended the Art Students League in 1907 after earlier study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. At the League, she studied under Kenyon Cox and won the William Merritt Chase still-life prize for an oil painting. This success reflected her strong academic training at the time.
The Art Students League was founded in Manhattan in 1875 as an independent art school open to students outside the traditional academy system. It became an important center for American artists, offering classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, and related disciplines.
O'Keeffe later moved away from the academic realism represented by her early training. Her encounter with Arthur Wesley Dow's ideas about design helped her develop a more personal approach based on line, color, and composition. Thus, the League belongs to the formative beginning of her career, before the abstract work that made her famous.
