At which New York art gallery did Georgia O'Keeffe first exhibit her work in 1916?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe first exhibited her work at the New York gallery known as 291 in 1916.

The gallery was operated by Alfred Stieglitz at 291 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Its formal name was the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, but the address became the name by which it is best remembered. Stieglitz used the space to show photography and European avant-garde art as well as American artists.

Anita Pollitzer brought O'Keeffe's drawings to Stieglitz, who exhibited them at 291 without her initial permission. O'Keeffe's work attracted attention because of its bold abstraction and unusual handling of line and form. The 1916 exhibition began a long professional and personal relationship between the two artists.

291 closed in 1917, but Stieglitz continued promoting O'Keeffe at later galleries. It is sometimes confused with the 1913 Armory Show, a separate exhibition that introduced many European modernists to a broad American audience.
