Georgia O'Keeffe maintained a home in Abiquiú, New Mexico, beginning in 1945.
O'Keeffe acquired and restored a ruined hacienda in Abiquiú in 1945, creating a home and studio that became an important base for her later work. The property included a famous courtyard wall and door, subjects that appear in several paintings and photographs.
She had already been visiting New Mexico for years and continued to spend time at Ghost Ranch. Abiquiú offered a more settled residence and studio environment, while Ghost Ranch remained a major source of landscape subjects.
Abiquiú is distinct from Santa Fe, where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located, and from Taos, another New Mexico community associated with artists. The house is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio.
