Georgia O'Keeffe maintained a historic adobe home in Abiquiu, New Mexico. The house, now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio, became one of the places most closely associated with her mature life and work.
O'Keeffe acquired the Abiquiu property in 1945 after years of searching for a home with a distinctive wall and door. She renovated the structure and used it as both a residence and a working environment. The courtyard, black door, surrounding hills, and changing light all entered her visual world.
Abiquiu is separate from Ghost Ranch, although the two places are relatively close and are often discussed together. O'Keeffe lived and worked at both locations. The Abiquiu house is now managed as a historic site, offering a direct view of the architecture and landscape that shaped her later paintings.
