Georgia O'Keeffe owned a house at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic landscape near Abiquiú, known for colorful cliffs, mesas, and broad desert views. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in the 1930s and found its terrain so compelling that she made it a recurring subject in paintings and drawings.
She eventually acquired a small house at Ghost Ranch, where she could work independently and observe the landscape closely. The surrounding hills and cliffs appear in works such as her paintings of the Pedernal and other New Mexico formations. O'Keeffe transformed recognizable places into simplified, monumental compositions.
Ghost Ranch and her Abiquiú home are related but different locations. The Abiquiú house included the famous walled garden and entrance, while Ghost Ranch was farther north and offered a more open desert setting. Both places became essential to understanding her New Mexico period.
