At which New Mexico site did Georgia O'Keeffe own a house beginning in 1940?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe owned a house at Ghost Ranch beginning in 1940.

Ghost Ranch is a dramatic area near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico, known for multicolored cliffs, mesas, and wide desert views. O'Keeffe first encountered the area during her New Mexico travels and later made it one of her principal places to live and work. She purchased a house there in 1940.

The landscape around Ghost Ranch appears in many of her paintings. She often worked outdoors or from nearby studios, isolating cliffs, bones, flowers, and other forms from the surrounding terrain. The site became closely linked with her artistic identity, although she also maintained a separate home in the village of Abiquiú.

Ghost Ranch is not the same place as O'Keeffe's Abiquiú house. The two properties are about 12 miles apart and served different roles in her life. Her Ghost Ranch home was later associated with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and preserved as part of her legacy.
