Georgia O'Keeffe maintained a home at Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic landscape near Abiquiú, known for red and yellow cliffs, open high desert, and distinctive geological formations. O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and began renting a house there in 1936. She later purchased the property and used it as a residence and studio.
The landscape became one of her most recognizable subjects. She painted cliffs, bones, trees, and broad desert spaces from the ranch and its surroundings. Ghost Ranch offered a more isolated setting than her home in the village of Abiquiú.
The two locations are related but not identical. O'Keeffe had homes at both Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú, and each contributed to her New Mexico work. Ghost Ranch is the site especially associated with the red cliffs seen in many of her paintings.
