Georgia O'Keeffe bought a house at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico in 1940.

Ghost Ranch is a landscape and retreat area near Abiquiú, north of Santa Fe. O'Keeffe first visited the area in the 1930s and became strongly attached to its cliffs, mesas, and changing light. She purchased a house there in 1940 and used it as a seasonal home and studio.

The property was separate from the Abiquiú house she later bought in 1945. Ghost Ranch offered a more remote setting, while Abiquiú became a practical base closer to village services. Both places supplied subjects for her paintings, including the dramatic formations she called the Black Place.

Ghost Ranch had a broader history before and after O'Keeffe's residence. It was associated with ranching and later became a Presbyterian retreat and education center. O'Keeffe's house is part of the region's cultural history, but the entire Ghost Ranch property is not exclusively an O'Keeffe site.
