Georgia O'Keeffe purchased her Abiquiú house in 1945 and later made it one of her principal homes and studios. The property, a former hacienda, required extensive restoration before it became a practical place for living and working.
O'Keeffe was especially drawn to the courtyard wall and door visible from the house. Those architectural elements appear in several works, including paintings that transform a specific doorway into a study of geometry, light, and repetition.
The Abiquiú property is often confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico place strongly associated with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch supplied many landscape subjects, while the Abiquiú house became a personal architectural subject and an important working environment.
