At which museum is the world’s largest public collection of Georgia O'Keeffe’s work held?

The story behind the answer

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum holds the world’s largest public collection of Georgia O'Keeffe’s work.

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1997, six years after O'Keeffe’s death. Its collection includes paintings, drawings, and sculptures spanning her long career, along with photographs, archival materials, and personal objects that illuminate her working life.

The museum was established to preserve and interpret O'Keeffe’s legacy in the region where she lived and worked for much of her later life. It also operates the O'Keeffe Research Center and presents exhibitions connected with modern art, American art, and the artist’s influence.

The Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago also own important O'Keeffe works, but neither has the largest public collection devoted specifically to her. The museum’s main site is in Santa Fe, while O'Keeffe’s historic Abiquiú home is managed separately.
